After Completion of Endodontic Treatment FAQ

What should I expect after my endodontic treatment?
Your root canal is permanently sealed inside, but outside there is only a temporary filling. You must see your regular dentist within a few weeks for a final crown or build-up. We include a free follow-up checkup next month to check healing. Do not chew on that side until crown is placed — tooth can fracture.
Yes, slight risk of nerve injury. Roots of lower back teeth are near a nerve that gives feeling to lip and chin. If irritated, you may feel tingling or numbness after anesthesia wears off. Usually temporary — goes away in days/weeks/months. Rarely permanent.
Yes, upper teeth are near sinuses. Surgery can create a small opening between mouth and sinus. It usually heals by itself. If it happens, we will tell you: Don’t blow your nose for 2-3 days. If you sneeze, sneeze with open mouth into tissue. Don’t create pressure.
Infections occasionally happen after surgery. You just need an office visit. Usually 1 week of antibiotics fixes it. Sometimes extra follow-up is needed.
